The Amazings

It would be stating the obvious to say that life in London can be a tad stressful. But fear not, Mary Dalgleish from the Amazings has the solution. The Amazings is a not-for-profit organisation which lets people who have retired or are near retirement share their skills or knowledge with others. Their website boasts "Classes, courses and wisdom from elders with amazing lifetime experience" and they do not disappoint!

I signed up for Mary's Indian head massage course with my friend Amber on a bit of a whim, and it was with trepidation that we arrived at the Old Street headquarters and made our way up to the studio. Would this be a group of smelly hippies trying to recruit us to their cult? Should we bolt before it's too late? We needn't have worried, we were greeted by the friendly staff and shown to a circle of other slightly nervous but thankfully very normal looking Londoners.

Mary, our course leader was an absolute delight and put everyone at ease and soon got us all loosened up. We learnt a bit about the history of Indian head massage and the benefits and then it was time to get hands on! We were taken step by step through a head massage routine which would take about 30 minutes to do at home, we got to practice on each other so not only did we all get to learn we all got a head massage too, bonus! Queue many borderline obscene sighs and purrs from us all, especially once we got the shampooing move...

I won't give away any of Mary's secrets but by the end we were all feeling incredibly relaxed and calm, we did a short relaxation exercise in the final minutes which almost had me snoring away. When we emerged afterwards back on to Old Street we were very ill equipped to cope with all the hustle and bustle in our newly found zen states. Think Buddy the Elf in New York and you're close. We managed to make our way home though and I slept like a baby that night. I also discovered the joys of coconut oil but that's a whole other post for another time I think.

I would highly recommend Mary and also the Amazings to anyone who wants to try out something new at a very reasonable price. There are loads of different courses and skills on offer so you're bound to find something to suit you, or something you never thought of trying before. Our course cost just £15 each for two and a half hours tuition, and I have learnt skills which will improve my life hopefully for my many years to come. Not to mention the fact that it's sorted out my Christmas present dilemmas, friends and family expect a head massage voucher to come your way pretty soon!!
